Noticing an unusual taste & odor in your tap water?

A person in a white shirt looking skeptically at a glass of water.

You might notice that your tap water has some taste and odor issues – maybe a bit musty or earthy. However, please be assured that your water is absolutely safe for drinking, cooking and all household uses. This is a purely aesthetic issue, although unpleasant for some.

Here’s what’s happening:

  1.  It’s temporary – it’s a harmless byproduct of algae blooms brought on by the summer heat in our Red Mountain Reservoir. Algae blooms grow faster with the extra summer sun and water, and can smell musty.
  2.  We’re working around the clock to mitigate this! We’re working on blending that water with our other water sources.
  3. About one-third of FPUD customers may notice it. The other two-thirds of FPUD customers don't receive water directly from Red Mountain and won't notice it.
  4.  It could be noticeable for several weeks as we cycle through the water. We’re testing the water regularly. It’s perfectly safe.

Here are some things you can do:

  • Chill it down! Cooling your tap water helps improve the taste.
  • Try running the tap for a minute or using an activated carbon filter from your fridge, or a filtered  pitcher, such as Brita, if you want to improve the taste.
