Noticing an unusual taste & odor in your water? No need to worry!
First and foremost, your water is absolutely safe to drink!
Metropolitan Water District, our wholesaler, has had an increase in algae growth in its Lake Skinner Treatment Plant. This is a common occurrence during extreme heat episodes like the one we had for several days. But rest assured, your water is safe and poses no health concerns. It is purely an aesthetic issue.
Metropolitan is currently using ozone and hydrogen peroxide to speed up the removal of the compound. They are also working to make adjustments in their supply to help reduce the taste and odor issue.
Customers who have a sensitive palate have described it as a musty odor.
Some of our customers are receiving only our local Santa Margarita River water, which is not experiencing these issues, while others in the east portion of our service area are receiving some Metropolitan water. This is why some customers are noticing the musty odor and others are not.
Here’s a tip to improve the taste: Chill it down or put it on ice.
